September Issues

Now that it is September, we are at the peak of the “bug season”. Ticks are at their peak at this time of the year. We have been plucking ticks off of grooming dogs all year. Fleas are increasing due to the wet weather we had recently.  Fleas and ticks can be found everywhere, including in cities. We have four different flea and tick products you can use to protect your pet from these vermin. I would recommend using Vectra 3D, as that will also prevent mosquitoes and other biting insects from bothering them. Nexgard is a chewable Flea and Tick preventive as well although it doesn’t prevent ticks from biting the dog initially.

Fall tends to be a bad time for allergy sufferers. Pets can be allergic to the pollen released by plants and to the mold that grows in grass. We have antihistamine compounds to combat the sneezing and itching caused by these allergens.

There have been some Parvovirus outbreaks recently. Several cases were seen in Milwaukee and there was also some seen in Walworth County. Parvovirus is a disease that is very hardy and can exist in the environment for a long time. This disease has a nearly 100% infection rate in unvaccinated dogs and 75% death rate in the affected pets. We include the vaccination for this disease in the “Distemper Vaccination”. If your dog is current with its distemper vaccination then you’re safe, if not then your pup is not safe. Leptospirosis can also be seen in rural areas and it too is included in the “Distemper Vaccination”. Lepto and Parvo is present in the wild dog and coyote population and can be spread when they urinate in puddles after it rains or if they have diarrhea on your property. Kittens are very susceptible to the Herpes Respiratory virus which causes eye drainage, and all cats can get Calici Virus which causes ulcers on all parts of the skin. We vaccinate against these two cat virus with the “Cat distemper” Vaccination. If your pets need to be updated on their DISTEMPER VACCINATION then please call us.

The good news is that September also brings Football Season. Be sure to root for your favorite team and Pray that the PACKERS go to the Super Bowl.
